My Nose Survives Winter

Monday, February 18th, 2013

copyright 2013 Bettina Network, inc.

I have been a loyal guest, staying at Bettina Network homes for a very long time.

Last year, I went to the kitchen in one of my homes very early in the morning and found the host bent over the kitchen sink with her head in a pot of steaming water.  Needless to say I was amazed and waited in the doorway to see what this was about.

She had a pot of boiling water, just off the stove, and was letting the steam from the water over her face.  When she finished, after about a minute, and poured the water into the sink, of course, we had to talk.  I made the coffee and she spilled the secret.  Every morning when she wakes she boils a pot of water - ”ed. note in a glass Corning pot” – puts her head over the water for a minute or two because this is the way she keeps her nose hydrated during the winter so it doesn’t get dry and give her a hard time with a little bleeding on those very dry days.

I tried it when I went home and found it works.  I have always had problems with dry nose during the winter.  When I blow my nose during the day it always comes with a little blood on the tissue.  That didn’t happen this year.  Thanks to my experience in the Bettina Network.

If you want a great place to stay in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. try this house and ask for the “doll room”.  I thought it was great and enjoyed my stay immensely.  My return visit this past weekend was a lovely surprise.  Some of the rooms inside the house have been redone and the doll room has some upgrades.  My daughter and I always stayed in that room.  Now she is too big to play with dolls, but she gave in and had a grand time playing with the dolls because the room now also contains a doll house to go with the dolls in the room.

I hope you write a blog on the room which has had its walls upholstered with the most beautiful fabric – and is well padded under the fabric.  I could make many comments about that, but I will refrain.  Just write about how you upholstered those walls.  It is so much nicer than wallpaper and so lush.  If I weren’t so committed to the doll room – where I play even when my daughter does not join me – I would ask for that room, but I just peeked in and loved what I saw.

Dr. Alice Amsden’s Commemoration at MIT

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

Dr. Alice Amsden, Barton L. Weller Professor of Economic Development, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Over the weekend of October 20, 2012 MIT held a commemoration/memorial for Dr. Amsden and it was recorded and published.  One of  the Bettina Network Community members called to ask that we post the email on Bettina Network’s Blog that we sent to those who purchased at Dr. Amsden’s Scattering Sale.  She had forwarded the link to a couple friends and they said the content of the weekend should have a wider ciculation and encouraged her to have the commemoration put on the blog.

In that spirit, the link follows and we invite you to take a look.  It was a tremendous couple of days and an opportunity to both pay tribute to Dr. Amsden and to learn about her ideas, work and family.  We came away with a much greater understanding of what she was about and a different set of ideas about how the world could work.

We sent the following message to those who purchased items at this sale and decided to share it with the Bettina Network’s world.

http://amsden.mit.edu/program/

http://ttv.mit.edu/videos/21431-alice-amsden-commemoration-part-1

“A couple months ago you purchased items at a Bettina Network Scattering Sale which were from the estate of Alice Amsden.

There was a memorial service for Ms. Amsden at MIT recently, which is now on-line.  We have included, at the top of this email, the link for you to use to see this service.  It is a fantastic tribute to Dr. Amsden and it gives you an idea as to who she was, her work, ideas, colleagues and more.

Some of us keep as much of a provenance of the items we buy as possible.  We assume you are one of us and would like to have this information that you can peruse as you wish.  There are six parts to the video and it is excellent.

Thank you for being a part of the Bettina Network Community and for the purchases you made at the Alice Amsden Sale.  We hope this video becomes a part of your collection and you keep it with the items you purchased from Dr. Amsdens estate.

At Bettina Network we are working on building a research library which would include such information on all the items we sell so the next generation will be able to search for and find the art, furnishings, everyday items and more of those who meant a lot to them.  I still wonder what happened to some particular items from my grandmother’s estate.  I would very much have appreciated being able to search for those items, so we are working to give others that opportunity.

We also hope the research library will be used by researchers, appraisers, historians and others to gain an idea into who owned what, why, its value when it was sold and its history before it was acquired by that particular person.

We hope this video is as meaningful to you as it was to us.  Besides the ideas and discussion in this Commemoration, the video about Alice Amsden from baby to the end of life was beautifully done as was the tribute to Dr. Amsden by her family.

We commend it to you with our best wishes and thanks!”

In Memory of Roger Fisher

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

by:  Marceline Donaldson

Sprinkled through Bettina Network’s Blog you will find memories of people we knew and with whom we have interacted over the years.  This time, it is someone who was one of those – along with Larry Susskind of MIT – who were majorly responsible for the growth and survival of Bettina Network, inc.

Roger Fisher was on my mind over the past week – because I wanted to thank him for helping us begin and move forward with the bed & breakfast part of this business.  I didn’t know where to find him and didn’t push to discover his whereabouts so the newspaper informed me this morning of Roger Fisher’s death.

A long time ago, in 1984, Roger Fisher and Larry Susskind turned up at our front door to talk about the possibility of using Bettina’s for their guests coming from around the world.  I remember Roger Fisher sitting in our living room when one of those working with him took me aside to ask if I knew we were entertaining “God”.  That was my introduction to Roger Fisher.  My response was – then “God” has come to the right place because we are building heaven’s annex.  Clearly, we understood there were at least two major ego’s in that room that day!

We were just starting this business and unlike those who claim to have started on a shoe string of maybe $10,000 in debt, we started this business with some $1,000,000 in debt.  I had no idea what I was doing – I knew why – I thought I really knew all there was to know about business – we had some experience with bed & breakfast in another house, but not much – so here we were not sure where we would land, how we would pull this off or where to turn and “God” walked into our living room.

Roger Fisher and Larry Susskind sent us lots of guests and set the tone for what we would become.  Larry and Leslie would come to stay when the weather was bad and they couldn’t make it to Southborough.  Unfortunately for us, they now live in Cambridge.

Over that time period, there were White and Black South Africans in the house at the same time just across the hall from one another before Nelson Mandela and the dismantling of apartheid.  They had never been together before and it was exhilarating for them and for us as they giggled together; went to dinner together; worked together and with Roger and Larry tried to bring about something that hadn’t been seen in South Africa for generations.  We became a bit worried when the last two days of their stay the house became as quiet as a tomb.  The White South Africans and the Black South Africans had separated; went to dinner in their separate groups; stopped going back and forth from one room to another and generally pulled apart, leaving for the airport in two vans – one with the White South Africans, one with the Black South Africans. We called Larry because we were concerned something had happened and learned about “re-entry”.  Something the soul does for you when you are going back into the separatist situation from which you’ve come.

We had Hindu’s in the house the day Gandhi was shot and we were expecting another couple the next day who were Sikh’s.  We had Greek Cypriots and Turks’ sharing the house at the same time during some difficult days for them and before all of them we had Russians before Perestroika.

At one point with the Russians we knew we were going to be picked up by the CIA and hauled off to federal prison because we knew nothing about what was coming, we only knew the Russians were the enemy and here they were exchanging research across our breakfast table with their American counterparts and who were their hosts? – Roger Fisher and Larry Susskind.

Our breakfasts were nothing short of sensational and we were heady being able to talk and listen and understand what was happening in the world outside of the very narrow vision of what was normal for Boston and Cambridge.  We were spared guests who talked about the weather, their aches and pains and their miscreant children.

We thought this was what bed & breakfast was all about and we shaped a business following the path laid out for us by Roger Fisher and Larry Susskind.  Without them we would have taken a different turn and probably would be sitting on the street corner wrapped in a sleeping bag – although a very elegant one!

You go through life and never really know what or how you have touched someone else’s life.  My procrastination in reaching out to Roger Fisher to say thank you is kind of typical of the way most of us live with the assumption that life is forever.  It is not and those words of gratitude and appreciation need to be said long before the end comes.

This is very late Roger Fisher, but thank you!!  Thank you for helping us understand how we could carry that $1 million in debt, survive and grow a business which contributes goodness to life.  We don’t pretend to know much about Negotiation the way you and Larry Susskind developed it, but we do know how human and equal we all become around a table sharing food and good conversation – that alone gives hope that one day we will stop the intense violence, pretending that it will solve our conflicts and bring about peace.

Those first few years when we entertained bed & breakfast guests from the Negotiation Project sent to us by Roger Fisher and Larry Susskind were days we shall never forget and days we always keep uppermost in our minds as a paradigm for this Bettina Network business.

We reached the point, in those days, of not wanting to have guests if they did not have great wisdom to contribute over the breakfast table.  Today, we have some remembrances of that and we strive to bring everyone who visits our homes and our host families into an understanding of what that was like and how fantastic a business this is when we keep those standards, that conversation, those dreams of a world full of diversity where we can come together, disagree, work through those disagreements and walk into a very bright light after breakfast.

Roger, may you walk into a great light and enjoy the fruits of your life’s work as you enter another sphere of growing in wisdom, knowledge and understanding in a way we will not understand until we reach that end point where we join you in your endeavors.

A Wonderful Concord Christmas Story

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

copyright Bettina Network, inc. for Barbara Marden 2011

A few days before Christmas I was giving a friend’s out of town visitor a tour of the house.  My friends six year old son David was with us and did he get excited when I showed him  a secret place to store treasures.  It was in our main bed and breakfast bedroom above the fireplace mantelpiece. Our “restoration” carpenter from New Hampshire created that little cavern when he tore down the wall above the mantelpiece and put shelves in the recess. David was less impressed by my description of what we found when the wall was torn. The major items were a ladies button boot, a breast pump, and some letters, each offering consolation for the death of a child.  Losing a child was apparently a common event for families from the time our house was built in the early 1700s through even later times.

One of the letters, three pages long, and now in the Concord library, showed beautiful handwriting similar to our forefathers’ writing of our Constitution. It was a letter from Cyrus Barrett to his sister Sally, who had married into the Wood family living in our house. The Barrett family house is now being restored as part of Concord’s historical park.  The Minutemen had ammunition hidden in the Barrett’s cornfield the day of the shot heard round the world. Written in New Orleans in 1819, Cyrus first offered condolences over a son’s death  and continued by describing a familiar theme, an economic downturn. I have not corrected the spelling in the following quotes:

“I was much affected by the maloncholly intelligence contained in your letter of the sudden death of your affectionate and much loved little John.  I recollect him perfectly and have often been amused by his innocent playfulness.  I am not surprised that his death should occasion the deepest sorrow in you, yet at the same time you are left with the comfortable assurance that he is happier than your fondest wishes and care could have made him.”

“New Orleans has for some time past been suffering under a heavy weight of commercial embarrasement.  Many of her most enterprising Merchants have failed and those who continue in business are constantly complaining of heavy taxes.  The Produce of the country is extremely low. Cotton which formerly sold for 30 cents now sells for 16 cts and other articles have suffered the same depression in values, but notwithstanding the times look so gloomy we are looking forward for a change.”

Thinking about the letters makes me glad to be alive today.  In spite of all the economic and political problems, we are saved the grief of losing so many children.

And of course so many of our tasks are much easier, for instance baking these Russian tea cakes I gave my friend to take home.  They make excellent cookies for any occasion.

INGREDIENTS AND DIRECTIONS FOR BAKING RUSSIAN TEACAKES:

1 cup butter                           1 teaspoon vanilla (or brandy)

½ cup confectioners sugar        ¾ cup chopped pecans

2and ¼ cup sifted flour             1 cup confectioners sugar

Cream shortening and sugar. Stir in vanilla.  Add flour and then nuts.  Form 1” balls and bake 14 to 17 minutes in 325 oven. While still hot roll carefully in confectioners sugar.

Bettina Having Fun!

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Our technology knowledge is moving fast.  You will find grapics, videos, music and more on Bettina Network’s Blog.

You will also find information about companiess and reviews of events.  For the company – these are not paid advertisements – we do not take paid advertisements.  These are comments and information from a member of the Bettina Network Community who has used the company’s services and/or products, thinks they are special and wants to share that information with the rest of the Bettina Network Community.

For events – someone from the Bettina Network decides which events we will attend and review.  If we attend an event, that does not mean that attendance will result in a review.  All of that depends upon what we think about what we have seen, heard and experienced.

Hope you enjoy the results – especially now that we have entered the picture age.

Press Release from Bettina Network, inc.

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Bettina Network, inc. is moving closer to its goal of becoming a community of people who are interested in sharing a simple, elegantly creative lifestyle.

As we expand the Bettina Network Commuity of people and services offered, we re-discover everyday that it is an elegant and very gracious lifestyle that allows one to build a personal and professional network with meaningful information to share and many ideas on living outside the overprocessed, overtechnologized society we all seem to be helping to build.

We are addressing how to live simply and minimize one’s footprint on this earth while not compromising comfort, convenience, graciousness  or elegance. How to live in a beautiful home with the house providing income to subsidize itself and with a constant stream of interesting people sharing our lives for a brief period of time, is how we started.

We are taking that concept along and adding more as many guests nudge us in the direction of a Movement.
The latest addition to this movement is Bettina Network Estate Sales. The estate sales part of the Bettina Network’s web site is up and will be added to and improved as time passes.

We hope you will give us your feedback on what you would like to see happen in this part of the Bettina Network.

Bettina Network Estate Sales will have “Moving Sales” ;”Total Estate Liquidations”; “Small Training Sales” – for our people, “Concert and Content Sales” and more. You will be able to go to the home or other site where the sale is being held and see what is for sale. Those in the Bettina Network Community are invited to the concerts and other small events which tie into and promote the sales and the artists.

The small everyday items will be there for you to purchase immediately and take with you. The rarer antique, art, music and other items will be on the Bettina Network Estate Sales web site for you to see and bid on for the duration of the sale. At the end, you may either pick up your items at the site or we will pack and ship them to you, – or,-  if you are going to eventually be in the town in which the sale is being held – we will store them for you at one of the bed & breakfast homes in the Bettina Network until you are able to pick up your purchases.

It is all great fun and the really exciting part of this is yet to come – stay tuned – or sign up for emails from Bettina’s to keep up to date on what’s happening.

To join the Bettina Network community you must have either stayed in a home in the Network; you must be a host family in the Bettina Network of bed & breakfast homes; or you must have used the Bettina Network, inc. to manage your estate or liquidation sale. Until that happens, we will communicate with you on LinkedIn and the various other places we network or you can read Bettina Networks’ Blog. We frequently add to the blog with all kinds of different information which we collect throughout the Network on what is happening in Bettina homes and other places in the Bettina Network – sometimes it is quite exciting. At all times, the blog entries are helpful to someone. It is an exchange of information to help you graciously and elegantly get through this life. ”

Bettina Network’s Policies

Friday, July 29th, 2011

copyright Bettina Network, inc. 2011

Having been in business over 20 years in bed & breakfast, we have learned much about this industry.

Our policies are in place because of the experiences we have had over the years and they have served us well.

We are not the fastest on the block, but we are concerned, considerate, safe and constantly changing to help create a better world – to be super concerned about preserving what we have as a world community and making sure our homes are all working towards being more efficient, more considerate of others, more considerate of the environment and knowledgeable about the health and happiness of our guests.

Every home in the Bettina Network is one we know well and whose family/owners we know well because someone from the Bettina Network spends the night in each home before we accept that home into the Bettina Network and before we take reservations for guests to stay in that home. From the office, we are in constant communication with our host families, making sure we get even better acquainted with them to know their strong and weak points and to be able to help them move to ever higher levels in this corporation.

We also are concerned about who the guests are who stay in a Bettina home.  We want to make sure both the guest and the Bettina Host Families are well cared for and cared about.  We are a community of people with a common interest in bed & breakfast as a way to travel – we all work together to make this a  great experience for everyone.  We have huge historic mansions, regular suburban houses, apartments, etc. to give you as large a choice as possible, but all thoroughly checked out.

We do everything we can do to minimize any possible problems.  We are not an unknown and unknowing entity, in place to make reservations for whoever comes or to take into the Bettina Network whichever property presents itself for inclusion in the Bettina Network.  Yes, we are a business and yes, we are in business to make a profit, but yes also we are concerned about how we make that profit.  We do not want it to be at the expense of others or to anyone’s detriment.  Our community grows larger each day and grows in depth, wisdom and knowledge – but especially in inclusiveness, caring, eco-consciousness and more.

That may be a slower, more expensive way to work, but it has been our choice and it has served us and our guests very well over the years.

You can arrive at a Bettina Home and know the guests who will be sharing that home with you are wonderful, interesting and concerned/considerate people.  If there is no host family present, you can be assured the Bettina Home is still well looked after and in great shape when you arrive.

You can arrive at a Bettina Home and know it has been checked and constantly re-checked so that you arrive to no surprises and it is the place described to you over the telephone or through the mail or through email.  We are very accurate in our descriptions and quality control is at the top of our agenda as we think through who would be great to stay in our homes and – unfortunately, we do have to make the call that some would not be great guests.  And yes, we also have to make the call that not everyone who calls us would make a great Bettina Host family and so we sometimes have to decline a family that wants to join the Bettina Network.

Bettina guests help us keep Bettina Homes at the top of the industry because they also are asked to keep us apprised of what their stay was like and we share with Bettina Host Families both the positive and negative feed back we get.  If, and that is very seldom, we get negative feed back it is responded to immediately and changes are made promptly.  Guests have sent us letters telling us how fantastic are the homes in which they stayed.  That is the result of our constant vigilence over the Bettina Network.

That is what we work for – that is what keeps us going – and that will continue to be our method of operating.  We hope you approve and support us as we move forward in this business.

We must apologize for the problems we have had with our technology – our Bettina’s Blog was lost for some reason – floating around in the ether until we could figure out how to bring it back.  Our listing on Google has been lost for reasons we don’t understand.  And we have experienced other upheavals which are totally unnecessary in this business world.  It is about competition and being raised up or lowered down because of your business policies and practices and how they affect this world.  It is not about one business trying to move out another because they don’t want competition and want the industry to themselves.  We are tenacious, persistent and very fair and good at what we do and we will continue to hold that space and that place at the top of this industry.

So Much To Do – So Little Time

Friday, March 11th, 2011

copyright Bettina Network, inc. 2011
A Bettina Host Family’s Reflections

“After reading your blog on Rev. Gomes and looking at my own life – this may be a morbid post, but it is where I am at the moment and I think it needs to be said.

It is great being a host family in the Bettina Network.  Bed & breakfast has focused my life and used all of my talents.  Sometimes, I really didn’t understand why I was going through so much upheaval and unhappiness as I tried to get life together.  I tried several careers, but none seemed to fit.  Each one didn’t like me – so I moved on to something else.  With bed & breakfast, its different.  I like this career.  It allows me to use every talent I have.

Funny thing about that – I started with a very different set of lifestyle values.  I needed to have a perfect house and garden.  I knocked myself out 24/7 trying to make sure the house was absolutely spotless. If a guest came along who knocked into the wall with their luggage going to their room I was right there within an hour with a little sandpaper and paint to take away any indication that humans had passed on that stairway.  I was a nervous wreck.

Now, I am thoroughly enjoying myself and understand this business a lot better.  Guests are returning at a higher rate and we are all a lot better off because of my epiphany.

I realized my home is not a funeral parlor.  It is a place for real-live-functioning-people, who want most of all to find ‘home’ away from their actual home.  There is enormous stress in traveling.  We all experience it and want it to stop, but then we travel again and have high moments of enjoyment, but the stress is never very far away.

My home has become that ‘home’ away from home – if I can be a bit immodest.  My focus has changed.  My concern is about the guest and not the house.  The Bettina people told me to make that my focus when I joined the Bettina Network.  And, they said, I would have a much fuller and better experience than if I made the house the focus.

Probably because I didn’t understand what they meant I said – yes, yes – and went about making the house the focus.  I now have a bed & breakfast HOME, which is different from a bed & breakfast house and everyone is happier for the transformation.  It is still clean and looks very nice, but not the hyperness of yesterday nor the fussiness of how I used to be.

Thanks folks – Bettina folks and guests too!  You have changed my life for the better and I look forward to a long career as a bed & breakfast host family in the Bettina Network and a researcher (which is what I do in my spare time).  I owe all of you for enriching my life beyond what I expected.

If you have a home you would like to use to  accommodate bed & breakfast guests, call us to find out more about the possibilities.

We have homes ranging from two bedroom apartments, where the host family lives in one bedroom and uses one bedroom and bathroom for bed & breakfast guests, to large mansions.  We are looking for farms, ranches, off-the-beaten track places, interesting host families, etc.  Do you have a dairy farm and want a little help?  Try bed & breakfast with guests who would love to spend a few days working on your farm.

Call us and let’s discuss putting your home in the Bettina Network!  Are you an artist and want to stay home to develop your art – try having bed & breakfast guests to pay your overhead while you give yourself time to develop as a full-time artist.

We have accommodated host families who are very wealthy and want to break out of their closed circle of friends to know more about the world –  to those who were facing foreclosure and bed & breakfast was survival and a way to maintain a home they were about to lose.

Call us to find out more about the possibilities and how this road could be your yellow brick road – except instead of the wizard at the end of the road, you could find knowledge, understanding, wisdom, fun, a world view you couldn’t get no matter how long or far you travelled and extra income.  Keep your home private, but at the same time open it to world travellers to let them see how you live and you find out about them over breakfast.
